Arrow No Internet With New Router, Computer, or Ethernet Adapter : MAC Spoofing

No Internet With New Router, Computer, or Ethernet Adapter : MAC Spoofing

Overview:
Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) configure their connections to work with one computer only. They do this by "locking" the connection to the unique Media Access Control (MAC) address of your computer.
MAC address is a unique number or identifier built into modems, routers and other network hardware.
This article will help you configure MAC Spoofing on your NETGEAR router to bypass the "locking" your ISP have configured on your connection.

Symptoms:
  • Added a router to your network and Internet connection stopped
  • Replaced old router with a new one.
  • Modem provides Internet access to one computer only
  • Unable to go online with a new NETGEAR router after running the Setup Wizard
Solution:
To fix this, configure the router to pretend to have the same MAC address as the ISP "approved" computer, instead of its own. This is called "spoofing the MAC address".
Note: Make sure that you are using the computer that works with your Internet connection and disconnect all other computers from the router.
  • If you cannot do this, you will have to find the computers MAC address so that you can enter it into the router manually.
    It is a 12-character hexadecimal number, so it may contain the characters 0-9 and A-F ( example : 00 : 21 : CC : 69 : F0 : F1).

It may be on a sticker on some part of the computer, or alternatively you could follow this article : How to Find an Ethernet Adapter's MAC Address
  • If you are unsure which computer was used, contact your ISP, and ask what MAC address was registered.

Process:
1. Connect the Cable modem to the Internet/WAN port of the router and the computer to any of the available LAN ports at the back of the router. Make sure that the ports where the two Ethernet cables are connected are lit.

2. Launch a web browser on the computer. Examples of web browsers are Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
3. Access the router settings page by typing http://www.routerlogin.com or 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of the browser. You can also use the following if the addresses given did not work:
Note: If you still cannot access the router, please see Unable to access Router’s Web Administration Interface to troubleshoot the problem.
4. Enter the following credentials:
  • Username: admin
  • Password: password
Note: The username and password is case sensitive.
If the default login credentials do not work, you might have changed the password. Use the new password you created. If you cannot remember your new password, you must perform a factory reset to restore the router to its factory default settings. For more information, please see Restoring a NETGEAR Router to Factory Default Settings.
The NETGEAR genie home page displays.
5. Under the Basic tab, click on Internet. For most cable Internet connections, just follow the settings shown below then click the Apply button.

Note: If you have an older NETGEAR router with the Smart Wizard UI, click on Basic Settings under Setup on the left blue panel.

6. To check the Internet IP address, click on ADVANCED >Administration>Router Status. For older routers with the Smart Wizard UI, you will be able to see Router Status under Maintenance on the left blue panel. If the Internet Port IP Address is showing as 0.0.0.0, please see How to Powercycle Your Home Network to refresh your network and you should be able to receive an IP address from your ISP.
